FAQs

Q: Can I learn calligraphy even if I am not artistic, creative or if I have poor handwriting?

A: When I was introduced to calligraphy at the University of Kansas, there were several students enrolled in the class who were not majoring in Art, but were taking Calligraphy to satisfy a Fine Arts requirement.  At the beginning of the semester, these students doubted they could learn Calligraphy, assuming that some artistic talent would be required.  However, every student in the class had the desire to learn, and by the end of the semester, each was successful.

In addition, to the students' surprise, not only did they learn calligraphy, but also the practices improved the legibility of their everyday handwriting and penmanship.  It was this class which convinced me that anyone who has the desire to learn and the motivation to practice can learn the art of calligraphy.

Q: How long will it take to learn calligraphy?

A: It is only fair to state that each student will progress at his or her own speed.  Calligraphy is not a skill which is mastered overnight, or even in a few days.  Most students who practice consistently 15-30 minutes at least 3-5 days a week, will develop the basic skills and the confidence needed to be successful within a few weeks.  More important, it takes practice, patience and the desire to learn.
